Budgeteer Endorsement Oct. 19, 2002
District 7A: Huntley
District 7A includes most of that half of Duluth, approximately east of Mesaba
and Blackman avenues.
Rep. Tom Huntley, DFL-Duluth, is seeking a sixth term. He is being challenged by
Duluth School Board member Harry Welty, a Republican.
Huntley, an associate professor at UMD, serves as the lead DFLer on the powerful
Health & Human Services Finance Committee. He has been particularly involved
in health care issues. As the running mate of Judy Dutcher in her ill-fated bid
for the gubernatorial endorsement, he became exceptionally well connected in
state political circles.
Welty is not your typical Republican (he won the primary after failing to get
the endorsement), and is something of a free thinker.
He has been an important voice on a sometimes dysfunctional school board that
has had difficulty making important decisions with regard to school closings.
We think Welty brings a fresh voice and energy to the table and know he would
work hard if he won. However, given the times and the need for influence in St.
Paul, we think Huntley will provide a more effective voice in the next two
years.
